Tooth Extraction

TOOTH EXTRACTION

Whether front or back teeth, tooth extraction is an important aspect of overall dental care that must be considered. In essence, tooth extraction is nothing more than the removal of the tooth directly out of the socket that is located within the jawbone. It is most commonly used as a way to remove teeth that have become decayed, damaged or broken. While your dental care provider will always try to fix a tooth or fill it, there are other cases where extraction is the only option.

Blocking Other Teeth From Coming In Normally

A tooth is only pulled or extracted when it is becomes so damaged that it cannot be repaired. In addition, a tooth that is simply too loose to provide any functionality should also be extracted. There are many reasons why a tooth requires extraction. This can include patients with extra teeth that are blocking other teeth from coming in normally. In addition, those with braces may require that a tooth be extracted to allow for more room for teeth that are being moved through the process of dental braces. Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted even before they emerge. This is often done in young adults in their late teen years or early 20s.

Simple Extraction or More Complex Surgical Extraction

An impacted wisdom tooth can cause severe pain because of a cyst or an infection. When this happens or when decay is present, extraction is typically the best solution. An oral surgeon will usually take x-rays prior to removing the tooth. Typically speaking, anesthesia is applied allowing for different levels of sedation. Next, the actual extraction takes place and may involve a simple extraction or more complex surgical extraction depending on the patient’s specific needs. Finally, most extractions require a follow-up visit with your dental care provider to be sure that no infection has occurred and that normal healing is in process.
