How To Properly Brush And Floss

HOW TO PROPERLY BRUSH AND FLOSS

   

Knowing the right way to brush and floss is more important than most people might imagine. For example, brushing at least twice a day or after each meal is absolutely essential. Equally important is to make sure that you have the right type of toothbrush. It should be small and soft with rounded bristles and should be changed about every 90 days. When brushing, it is ideal to place the toothbrush at approximately a 45° angle to the surface of the tooth.

Avoid Applying Too Much Pressure

This should be done at approximately the point where the gums and the teeth meet. Using small circular motions brushing gently while targeting the teeth and gums in an ever so gentle fashion is best. Avoid applying too much pressure or scrubbing vigorously. This can ultimately damage tooth enamel and can cause injury to soft tissue of the gums. In addition, never underestimate the importance of flossing. Food particles and bacteria are harbored in the small spaces between teeth. That is why it is so vitally important to floss as a way to prevent decay and recession of the gums. Flossing removes food particles, bacteria and even plaque from spaces between the teeth.

Work The Floss Between The Contact Points

These are areas where a traditional toothbrush simply cannot reach. When flossing, be prepared to clean the spaces between the teeth in all areas, front and back. Flossing should be a regular routine habit. To begin, simply dispense an 18-inch long piece of flossing material and wrap one end around the middle finger on each hand. Continue wrapping until there is about a 4-inch spread of usable floss between the fingers. Work the floss between the contact points of teeth down toward the gums. Once the floss is securely between teeth, floss around each individual tooth and gently move the floss in an up-and-down motion to dislodge debris.
